The Australian Wetland Network (AWN) is a national network of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) involved in conservation and wise use of wetlands. We reviewed our membership in 2013 and now have 34 members, representing peak organisations and national organisations, regional and local groups involved in advocacy, education and wetland management. The first activity for our new members was to provide input to a consultation process held by the Australian Government to develop a National Wetland Policy.

Conservation Volunteers Australia is proud to host the Secretariat of the Australian Wetlands Network (AWN). Registrations are now open for AWN’s NSW World Wetlands Day Forum. The Forum will be of interest to government, non-government and community representatives with an interest in wetland conservation. Registrations close January 25 2017.
The World Wetland Network (WWN) is a global network of over 2,000 non-government organisations (NGOs) initiated at the Ramsar Conference of the Parties (COP) in South Korea, 2008. It arose from the need for NGOs to arrive at Ramsar meetings well prepared, and participate effectively. Australian Louise Duff was recently appointed Chair of the World Wetland Network. Louise is the Program Manager – Wetlands Catchments Coasts with Conservation Volunteers, and administers the Australian Wetland Network.

This news update is from the 12th Ramsar Conference of Parties (COP12), held on June 1-9, 2015 in Uruguay. The COP brought together 800 government representatives from 168 contracting parties to debate and adopt resolutions. These drive global policy for wetland conservation and wise use going forward.

At time of writing I am busy preparing to attend the 12th Ramsar Conference of Parties (COP12), which is being held in Punta del Este, Uruguay from June 1-9 2015. My role will be to coordinate World Wetland Network (WWN) activities for NGO representatives at the COP.
Representatives of NGOs, community groups, IOPs, and their supporters are invited to a pre-COP meeting prior to the Ramsar COP 12 in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on June 2 2015.
In 2014 the World Wetland Network (WWN) conducted a survey of WWN’s members and the broader wetland conservation community. The survey overwhelmingly showed that NGOs are committed to Ramsar and want to do more. It also developed recommendations for the Ramsar to consider. The full report is now available.

The Ramsar Convention took this opportunity to engage with the world’s environmental leaders to work towards its overall mission to reverse the loss of wetlands.
