Protecting threatened species and enhancing critical wetland EECs, Nambucca Estuary
WetlandCare Australia has recently been awarded an NSW Environmental Trust Grant to work with landholders in the Nambucca Estuary catchment.
This project will focus on enhancing and protecting EEC wetland habitats across key sites in the lower Nambucca River Catchment. Works will aim to restore and protect critical habitat for threatened species, including the Endangered Black-necked Stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) and Vulnerable Brolga (Grus rubicunda) by implementing wetland rehabilitation works across a 1,000 hectare connected landscape including endangered saltmarsh, freshwater wetland and swamp sclerophyll communities.
On-ground works will centre on 3 km of protective fencing, sustainable land management (including acid sulfate and erosion management), and 16 ha weed control (focusing on WoNS Lantana, Water hyacinth and Salvinia).
Through the project WetlandCare Australia will build on existing partnerships with landholders and stakeholders throughout the catchment. On-ground works will be strongly supported by extensive landholder capacity building, property planning and training activities.
The project will focus on priority targets identified in OEH SOS threatened species management actions and the Nambucca Estuary Management Plan as well as key on-ground activities identified through extensive hydrology modelling and acid discharge event monitoring.
