Wilsons River - Restoring EEC Wetland and Riparian Koala Communities Project
WetlandCare Australia is working with a landholder at Tuckurimba, Northern NSW, who has recently been awarded a 25th Anniversary Landcare Grant to undertake bush regeneration activities throughout his 78 hectare property.
Through this project, the landholder is working alongside WetlandCare Australia to restore 7.5 hectares of Riparian and Freshwater Wetlands currently infested with environmental weeds, such as Camphor Laurel and Coral Trees. A corridor of trees will be planted to provide food for the local Koala population and will serve as a connecting link for them between the vegetation communities on the property.
WetlandCare Australia and the landholder will plant 500 trees to re-establish the riparian vegetation community, providing important habitat for the local threatened Koala population. WetlandCare Australia and the landholder will be partnering with Friends of the Koala to achieve these on-ground works.
“With this funding from the Australian Government we will be able to work with the landholder to help care for the Koala population in the local area.” Senior Project Officer, Eli Dutton from WetlandCare Australia said. Mr Dutton further added, “We will also be aiming to restore an area of Freshwater Wetland, which is an Endangered Ecological Community and, as such, is home to many threatened species, some of which occur on the property.”
This project is supported by WetlandCare Australia, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.
